The 1791 Correspondence: When Benjamin Banneker Challenged Jefferson’s Hypocrisy
The year is 1791. The United States is a young republic, ostensibly founded on the principle that "all men are created equal." Yet, slavery is the law of the land, and Thomas Jefferson, the very author of the Declaration of Independence, is an influential slaveholder.
In his widely read 1785 book, Notes on the State of Virginia, Jefferson expressed deep, scientifically unfounded skepticism about the intellectual capabilities of people of African descent.
Benjamin Banneker, a free man and a self-taught intellectual who had already built what many considered to be the first striking clock made entirely out of wood in America and assisted in surveying the land for the nation’s capital (Washington, D.C.), read Jefferson’s words. His response was a masterpiece of eloquent, fearless confrontation.
Banneker's Genius: An Almanac as a Weapon
Banneker did not simply send a fiery note; he sent Jefferson a physical, irrefutable proof of Black genius: his newly published Almanac. This annual publication contained Banneker’s complex astronomical calculations, tide tables, and weather predictions—work that directly contradicted Jefferson’s claims of Black intellectual inferiority.
He challenged Jefferson not on moral grounds alone, but by holding a mirror up to the statesman's own words. He drew a powerful parallel between the colonists' fight for freedom from British tyranny and the enslaved person’s struggle for basic human rights.

Jefferson’s Reply: A Concession to Unquestionable Talent
Jefferson's response, dated August 30, 1791, was carefully worded. He thanked Banneker for the Almanac and expressed his wish to see "such proofs as you exhibit" that Black men possessed "talents equal to those of the other colours of men."
While Jefferson later attempted to downplay Banneker's achievements, the correspondence was published by abolitionists and circulated widely. It became a powerful, undeniable argument against slavery and a monumental affirmation of African American intellect.
